We stumbled upon the White Swan having taken to the country lanes to avoid a traffic jam on the A64, and I'm glad we did. The car park is behind the pub itself, via a very narrow access road. If you're in anything bigger than a Land Rover, watch your wing mirrors! The car park is adjacent to the "beer garden", although this is no run of the mill beer garden. This beer garden has large, seemingly painstakingly maintained gardens complete with weeping willows and duck pond. (There are signs inside the pub saying there are two ponds, but I only saw one, that said, I didn't explore all the garden area.)Whilst I'm sure the garden would look as picturesque in whatever weather, it must look it's best in summer. Once inside, the landlord greeted us with a warm welcome, and was eager to ensure our time in his establishment was pleasant. A look at the "Specials" Board" was enough to whet the appetite of anyone that appreciates good food, but the menu offered a wide and varied selection of dishes for everyone, vegetarian and "chicken nugget" loving children alike. Both my wife and I started with the "Home Grown Vegetable Soup", and both agreed that it was excellent. For our main meal, we both had the Home Made Steak In Ale Pie, with fresh home grown vegetables. Again, both my wife and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It became evident during the course of the meal, by reading the reviews that were framed and proudly displayed on the walls, and by listening to the comments of other diners, that this was the sort of place that people came for a special treat, when they wanted good food. At around 20 for the two of us, we agreed we had recieved excellent value for money, given the quality of both the service and the food, the ample portions and not to mention beautiful surroundings both indoors and out. We will certainly visit the White Swan again, although it is around 80 miles from where we live. We'll perhaps drive up there as a special treat, when we want good food.
