Not bad real ale, although John Smith's cask is a real waste of a handpump.

The staff are always really friendly and seem to be very hardworking - much better than a lot of the tossers who seem to work in York.

Food is great, and pretty good value.

Oh, and Monday club at the Charles is definitely not to be missed - although expect to get very drunk!

good pub- where me and my mates gather before we go into town- we all live in heslington- cheapish drinks student orientated- plays sky sports which is good for footy etc

Always been one of the worst pubs in York in my opinion. Survives due to Student who know no better and can't be bothered to wonder a mile down the road into town foor decent food and beers. Anyone who rates the pub should actually try somewhere different!

A load of toss to be honest.

Who wants to overhear a gang of beardy engineering students talk about logic gates and ohms law ?

This pub should be knocked down. Students should be busy at universty rather than spunkinhg daddies money on Steaming Hot Bitter and Peanuts !!

I honestly think this is a great pub, the staff are friendly especially if you're polite to them.... yes it is generally a student pub but then again what do people expect when it's so close to a university? From what I saw, it was the people that went in there and thought that they could talk to the staff however they wanted to coz the staff were all studenty-looking types that got the worse service and fair play, if someone is rude to you then you're not gonna go out of your way to make their day!
The drink is cheap, the food is well priced and gorgeous...what else could you want really?? and they have TWO it-boxes!! This place rules and I'm sure the majority of people that you ask that drink in there on a regular basis would also agree. Long live the Charles and it's lovely staff members!!

I left York about a year ago, and i truly miss this pub very much. The staff knew all of us student nurses by name, and a few of us even had dalliances with the staff.Whenever we saw any of the staff, say in ziggy's, it was like seeing a celebrity. DJ Dave was a truly great bar manager, with the amazing casper as his sidekick! Although we never got to win quizgo, many a memorable evening was had in the most wonderful pub in york, the charles!!

Just wanted to reply to Jackie G that due to licensing laws minors aren't allowed inside but are more than welcome in the beer garden, think you'll find that with many pubs. Working here I may be biased but for students this is a top notch establishment that practically invented the phrase 'cheap and cheerful'. To all those business types who come for lunch I would like to remind them that no amount of 'phoning ahead' is going to get them their food any quicker during a busy lunchtime in their allotted 20 minutes. Firt come first served. Get over it. And Martin, I'm intrigued... who dya pull??

Fantastic pub really, i just wish the interior was bigger. If you're under 25 i would doubt that theres a better pub in York. Cheap Drinks and loads of students!

This pub is good. The thing that really makes it a worthwile experience, though, is you get the great oportunily to see Ken Todd in the flesh if you have not already seen him! This is guaranteed, I kid you not. He only seems to leave to give lectures.

Wouldnt drink in this pub if you paid me.Why?. because they wont allow children in(or citizens of york with children). As a resident of heslington this would be the perfect place for sunday lunch,it has a beutiful low beamed atmosphere inside and a large beer garden out back, but the one time i popped in with my(6 year old son at the time)to say happy birthday to my friend,i was told to leave.Obviously they are making so much money out of students, and want to guard and control that market so fiercly that they have no care for anyone elsewho doesnt fit into that category.Customer discrimination,i call it.

I find it hard to believe this is the best pub in York. The range of beer is not great, just p*ss poor commercial stuff. The video juke box can be really annoying when no one puts on anything and you get shots of surfers from the 80's. Food is alright, garden is quite nice, but it just seems so ordinary.

I started drinking here many years ago when I was a 'Stowdent' and although it is not the haven of the lecture-dodging barfly as it was in my day, it still has the best beer garden in York, a massive range of beers and if you can see past all of the townies having lunch here because they can pretend they are rich in front of the stowdents, it's a top pub with good atmosphere and pretty good food. It can take a while for food to arrive but in such a spiffy little boozer...who cares? Still my favorite after many years of loyal patronage.

This pub has great entertainment value. The other week was fun, some bloke ordered some food and only half arrived. He got two portions of free chips which the barman confiscated when the bloke asked for his money back. Fair play to the barman, the guy only paid for one sandwich so he should have noticed when he ordered that he only paid for one and he was being a bit bolshy. Its a long wait for the food because of all the stowdents. SCUMBAGS

Went for lunch on a work day, and it took an hour to get served. This took the piss a little, especially because they didn't warn us of the wait, and didn't apologise at all afterwards. It was well busy, but other people seemed to be getting served quicker, so they either singled us out, or have a very ineffective queing system for food orders. Last week, some other people went from my office and had to cancel their order and get a refund cos their break had finished before the food arrived.

That said, it's a nice pub with a lovely beer garden when it's sunny. And the food was good when it did arrive, so basically, just don't go for food at lunch time unless you have a long time free.

Really pi**ed me off when they stopped serving Cheesy Chip bagettes for 2 pound, instead going for the more common menu. Pi**ed all the stowdents off as well which was some consolation! However, always used to get tonnes of aphids in the salad which was off putting but a suprise nevertheless! But now they appear to have changed the suppliers and I have yet to find an aphid. HURRAH! Beer is always good (they have a high turnover of beer because of the stowdents so it is always a nice pint). Nice to sit outside in the summer too.

This pub is not too bad, though it no longer does the yellow card thing I understand. There are enough drinks offers on certain nights to compensate. The beauty of this pub is location, but most importantly the fact that it has a juke box which plays the video of the song you want to listen to!

Im not sure if I like this pub. Yes it was nice and convernient for sunday lunch and the quiz was a laugh but i think that was the social situation rather than th pub itself. In fact I remember going in the summer and asking for just a green salad as a main course and they served me with a rotting lettuce leaf, one slice of tomato, two slices of cucumber and some parsley. (no dressing provided) and tried to charge me £3.50. Their drinks are fairly inoffensively priced though and in the 'heat'of the you do get to see half of campus there, making it well lively outside. Plus I wooed my now girlfriend over a drink in there, or maybe thats just cos im a playa, small but cool
