Away for the weekend we visited this pub on sat lunch and had a meal, which was lovely. Then because of the good atmosphere we returned in the evening to be greeted by the same staff who were very efficient, friendly as was the landlady, so ended up staying all night!! So much for our first visit to York, all we saw was the little john pub!!! would highly recommend if you want all round good pub!

Have been drinking in this pub on and off for many years although times change (pool table music nights etc) it has remained consistant with good food cheerful staff and always a warm welcome!

certainly a fantastic place, brill staff atmosphere very friendly - no doorstaff - thats a good move - great to see Karaoke is back bringing in some great voices- a good group of firemen from Middlesborough come on a regular basis to Monday night karaoke nights - that says it all- i will be back!!!!!

Karaoke nights, pool tables and giant Jenga?? Seems times have changed at The Little John.

I worked at TLJ for a couple of years in the mid-90s, whilst at Uni in York. I learned more at TLJ than I ever did at Uni, but that's probably because I spent more time behind the bar than behind a lecture hall desk.

Many an evening spent discussing life with Jeanette, Leanne, Tracey and Simon - before being told to get back to work & sweep the yard floor/bogs/ash-trays!! Defo the most glamorous mother & daughter pub management team in York!!

Good old-fashioned boozer, with characters rather than posers.

I'll be expecting a free pint if I ever pop back in...

The reason the students are gonna bum this pub is because half of them work here(of have done in the past)..!!! My review doesnt change...!

Best pub eva cos its got a pool table, a dart board and giant jenga, also serves scrummy cheesy chips and pints of scrumpy cider, a great afternoon skiving off uni.!!!

Visited this pub for the first time last night, my mates have been to a few gigs in the cellar bar in the past unfortunately there was no gig last night but theres a pool table in the downstairs area which kept us entertained for an hour or so, girl behind bar was really nice and chatty and landlady too!! nice boozer!!

Submitted by connor on 25/01/2006 11:27:18

Ok, maybe my review was a bit harsh, ill up the rating slightly, as the staff WERE quite friendly, and the pup serves a good pint..!I thought it was great...to begin with, through the week, but when i returned the following 'weekend' i ended up been bitterly dissapointed when i was turned away, without explaination, by the large cockney landlord, i had befriended only a week earlier....hence my review..!!

Submitted by local hero on 24/01/2006 02:12:55

Have to disagree with previous comments pub is lovely, staff are excellent wheneva you visit this pub!!!!

Submitted by Mark on 23/01/2006 17:17:57

A decent pint, but the bar staff are only friendly if its during the week, when the pub is empty, and they need your business.! Comes 2 the weekend and all u get is 'sorry lads not tonite'..? What do u mean not tonite.....i have just spent a fortune in your pub all week...!

2 faced cockney landlord, friendly as fuck through the week, a arrogant prick, if your face doesnt fit at the weekend..!

Spending the weekend in york we had the misfortune to wander into this place, I belive Dick Turpin must be running the pub at the rip off price charged for two shorts, I can expect priced like this in an upmarket bar but not in this fleapit with a clientel full of les battersbys . avoid like the plague

We have just spent a great weekend in York staying at Jacks Tapas Bar and Little John pub. The rooms at Jacks are clean & tidy and we found the staff very welcoming and friendly and the Tapas food was really good too.
We have read the review below and can't believe they are talking about the same place.
Thanks again for a great weekend we will definately come back and stay again.

As the licensee of The Little John may I please make aware that Mr Stephen Scott never made any complaint in anyway, shape or form about the afore mentioned 'credit card transactions' or have I been contacted by the police or any other authorities concerning the above.

Please feel free to pop in for a friendly drink and draw your own conclusions.

All publicity is good publicity! Cheers Mr Stephen Scott

Please be aware when you pay by switch in this pub. They skim your switch card and then use your details to duplicate a card. I had £2k taken out of my account in one month. Hopefully this will be printed, to warn others.

BEER POOR
FOOD WORSE
ATMOSPHERE RUBBISH
BAR STAFF POOR
ENTERTAINMENT THE FAT LAD TRIES HARD AND THINKS HE'S GOOD, BUT RUBBISH THE LITTLE GINGER WOMAN IS JUST VERY LOUD AND TRYING, I THINK SHE'S THE OWNER. THE CUSTOMERS JUST ABOUT SET THE TONE OF THE WHOLE PLACE.

Well i'm gonna stick up for this place on two grounds. Firstly there's Amy who works behind the bar. (just look when she bends down to get something from the fridge you'll see what i mean) and then there's the karaoke on a monday and wednesday night if its still on. If you're there in happy hour its cheap too! so come on guys, give amy a break.

It is set up to be very good. On atmospheric street, good history (did Dicky Turpin not get laid out here after his one way visit to Tyburn?) and from outside looks the part.

However, like a Diana Ross penalty, when you step inside it misses the goal by a mile. Shame.

Submitted by Richard Crabtree on 14/02/2002 21:51:43

Completely agree. The staff are unfriendly and the jukebox is a rip-off too. They have a good underground room though which has seen a few cool events.

Submitted by Tom on 05/10/2001 15:32:19

Crap beer, food preparation most unhygenic ever - made by people who can't cook. Avoid this place at all costts and certainly don't eat there - complete rip off
